The Largest Circus

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was once known as "The Greatest Show on Earth" and was the largest circus in history, performing from 1919 until its final show in 2017.

It traveled extensively across the U.S. using a specially designed train that housed performers, animals, and equipment.

Despite its storied popularity, attendance declined in the 21st century due to shifting entertainment preferences and heightened concerns over animal welfare.

Captain Kidd's Treasure

Captain William Kidd, born in 1645, was a Scottish sailor known for his piracy in the 17th century. By 35, he had joined a French-English pirate crew in the Caribbean, eventually becoming captain after a mutiny. Kidd and his crew operated as privateers for the Governor of Nevis, keeping the loot from enemy ships while protecting the colony.

By 1695, Kidd was married to a wealthy woman in New York. He was commissioned by The Governor of New York – Richard Coote, 1st Earl of Bellomont to hunt notorious pirates but struggled during his two years in the Indian Ocean, leading to rising tensions among his crew. In 1698, he captured the valuable Indian ship Quedagh Merchant, renaming it Adventure Prize. After burning his unfit ship, he hid the Adventure Prize in the Caribbean, believed to have been discovered in 2007.

On his way back to New York, Kidd concealed treasure as leverage if he was captured. However, he fell into a trap set by Bellomont in Boston and was arrested in 1699. After a year in Stone Prison, he wrote letters to negotiate his freedom by hinting at hidden treasures. Shortly before Kidd's execution, Bellomont recovered a small cache of Kidd's treasure buried in Cherry Tree Field on Gardiners Island (off the coast from New York). Was this all of Captain Kidd's treasure, or are there more hidden caches still out there?

Kidd was ultimately tried in London for piracy and murder, hanged on May 23, 1701, and his body was displayed over the River Thames as a warning to others.
