Fingerprints Fact
The First Criminal Caught Using Fingerprints was in 1892 in Argentina
Francisca Rojas’ two young sons were found murdered in their home, their throats cut. Rojas claimed an unknown intruder had killed them. Suspicion initially fell on a local man, who was arrested and tortured, yet maintained his innocence.
The Breakthrough
Inspector Juan Vucetich, a Croatian-Argentinian police officer and pioneer of fingerprinting, noticed a bloody fingerprint on a door inside the house.
Vucetich had been quietly building a fingerprint classification system.
He compared the bloody print to Rojas’ fingerprints.
The match was exact — something never proven in court before.
The confession
When confronted with the fingerprint evidence, Rojas confessed. She had murdered her children after her lover refused to marry her if she had children.
