Hythe is one of those Kent towns that is easy to overlook until you start exploring it on foot. With historic buildings, fascinating military history, countryside, waterways and plenty of character, it makes a brilliant setting for an outdoor treasure hunt.

We recently took CBRE to Hythe for a team building treasure hunt, giving us the perfect opportunity to explore a brand-new location for The Great Game.

A New Treasure Hunt Location for The Great Game

We're always looking for interesting new places to create treasure hunts, and Hythe immediately stood out.

Rather than simply following a route from one landmark to another, our treasure hunts encourage teams to explore their surroundings while completing a mixture of puzzles, questions, observations and challenges.

Hythe works particularly well because there is so much variety packed into a relatively small area.

During the CBRE hunt, teams found themselves exploring everything from historic sites to rural surroundings.

Discovering Hythe's History

One of the highlights of the route was the area's military history.

Hythe is closely connected with the Royal Military Canal, an impressive defensive waterway constructed in the early 19th century as part of Britain's preparations against a potential invasion by Napoleon.

It provides a very different experience from the historic buildings and streets of the town, and gave the teams another interesting part of Hythe to discover during the hunt.

There was also an historic castle to find, adding another layer of history to the route.

From Historic Buildings to the Countryside

One of the things we particularly enjoyed about creating a treasure hunt in Hythe was the change of scenery.

The route wasn't simply a walk around a town centre.

Teams also encountered a rural church and even a farm with cows!

That variety is exactly what makes an outdoor treasure hunt interesting. You never quite know what you are going to come across around the next corner.

And because the challenges are connected to the places teams visit, the surroundings become part of the game rather than simply being something to walk past.

Challenges Around Hythe

Of course, discovering Hythe was only part of the experience.

The CBRE teams also had to complete a series of challenges as they made their way around the route.

The challenges are designed to encourage teams to work together, think creatively and pay attention to their surroundings.

Some require observation, some involve problem-solving and others are simply designed to get everyone involved and having fun.
