The Granta bryg route closely follows the path of the original Cambridge route and finishes at the same treasure. Cambridge was originally called Granta bryg (Granta Bridge) because the river it stands on was once called the Granta not the Cam. In time the ‘Gr’ changed to a ‘C’ and the ‘nt’ changed to ‘m’. People must have thought that if the town was called Cambridge then the river it stood on must be called the Cam. They began to call the river that.
