1.

  • Exit street view mode by clicking on the arrow in the top left corner.
  • Change the map style back from 'Clean' to 'Everything' so the details and names re-appear.
  • Align your screen so it is facing north (by clicking on the compass in the bottom right corner once).
  • Position your screen so it is in 2D mode by clicking the 2D icon wanderlust treasure hunt club & scavenger hunt club 2D icon in the bottom right corner just once. DON'T GET CONFUSED - when you are in 2D mode the 3D button will be visible and vice versa.
  • Slowly zoom out from the tunnel of love and as you do so notice names of places start to disappear.
  • Keep zooming out until you start to see the western border of the country.
  • In the west of this country there are 2 large cities whose name's begin with L identify these as you slowly zoom out.
  • Keep zooming out until one name disappears (if they both disappear at the same time this is a glitch zoom back in and out to fix it). Once one has disappeared stop.
  • What is the name of the only city beginning with L that is left? Use the English spelling.

    • Going through the middle of this town is a road running from east to west.
    • This road kinks around a square in the middle - on the south western edge of the square is a castle, on the north western edge is a church.
    • Along this road are several other churches, explore along it and find the only one which is across the road from a 'Automated Teller Machine' (if you are stuck find a hint in the fact below).
    • Move your view so it is above this church and aligned to north.

    The first Automated Teller Machine was installed at Barclays’ Enfield Town branch in north London in June 1967. Its invention is credited to British inventor John Shepherd-Barron. The story goes that Mr Shepherd-Barron saw vending machines selling chocolate bars and asked why a similar machine couldn’t be used to dispense cash.

     

    • Move the height to roughly 800m.

    • This will bring you into a photo, check you are in the right photo by looking around for a small gate which is open leading into the churchyard. If you can see this you are in the right photo, if you can't then re-do the previous steps until you can.

    This church is 1 of 16 in the east of Ukraine all of which became UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2013. Known as tserkvas they bear testimony to a distinct building tradition rooted in Orthodox ecclesiastic design interwoven with elements of local tradition, and symbolic references to their communities’ cosmogony.

    • Click enter.
    • Your screen will now zoom over the country and settle spinning around a new location.
    • A box will also appear with information on this landmark, close this box by clicking on the X, this will return your screen to 2D and above the castle.
    • Click into street view mode (by clicking on the man icon).
    • This will bring up a series of blue lines (streets) and blue circles (photos).
    • You will notice to the south east of the castle are several numbered houses. 
    • There are a couple of houses whose number is the same number as the regions in Ukraine. Locate the one which is closest to the castle. The regions include all oblasts (administrative divisions), autonomous republics and cities with special status. You may use the internet if you need to!
    • Click on the blue circle which is closest to this house.

    • You will now be in an aerial photo from which you can see the castle on one side and the castle bridge below you. If you are not in this photo then exit and re-do the previous step to get in the right photo.
    • Study the photo and fill in the gaps of the following description of the area.
    • Chose from the list of words below the description, use the only words left remaining as the password to access the next clue.

      The castle was built during the 14th century to protect the bridge that leads up to the Old Town to the east which sits in a huge bend in the Smotrych River.

      This is the only transport link to the city's Old Town neighbourhood At a height of 27m and length of 88m it is a considerable feat of medieval engineering and at its base there is a small tunnel.

      North from the bridge is a blue roofed church which dominates the historic Polish section of this town (After the Union of Lublin in 1569 and the formation of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth Ukraine fell under Polish administration).

      In the Old Town there are several tall towers but only one which has a thin gold object on its top.

      To the south of the castle is a large cross on top of a cliff. At the base of this cliff is a wooden church.
