Adolf Hitler and Munich
After Hitler was discharged from the German Army in March 1920, he returned to Munich and went to work full-time for the National Socialist German Workers  Party (Nazi Party), which was headquartered in the city. He rented a small bedroom at Thierschstrasse 41 from 1920 to 1929 (the building you have just visited). Later, he rented a second room to use as an office. In 1936, the Munich city council placed a plaque on the building which read, "Adolf Hitler lived in this house from 1 May 1920 to 5 October 1929". The building still stands; Hitler's former room is used for storage.

 

Beer Halls and the Munich Beer Hall Putsch.
Beer halls are a traditional part of Bavarian culture. Munich is the city most associated with beer halls; almost every brewery in Munich operates a beer hall. 
The Bürgerbräukeller , located in Munich, was a particularly prominent beer hall in Bavaria that lent its name to the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, an attempted Nazi coup led by Adolf Hitler. The Bürgerbräukeller had long been a Nazi meeting place, and was the starting point of the 1923 coup which took place on 8–9 November 1923. Approximately two thousand Nazis were marching to the Feldernhalle (a monument in the city centre), when they were confronted by a police cordon, which resulted in the deaths of 16 Nazi party members and four police officers. The beer hall has since been demolished.

 

How did Oktoberfest begin?
The festival originated on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria.
The festival concluded five days later with a horse race held in an open area that came to be called Theresienwiese (“Therese’s green”). The following year the race was combined with a state agricultural fair, and in 1818 booths serving food and drink were introduced. By the late 20th century the booths had developed into large beer halls made of plywood, with interior balconies and bandstands.

 

Schottenhamel - The Oldest Beer Tent
The tent you have just visited is the oldest beer tent, in 1867, the forerunner of the Schottenhamel tent was still a small wooden shack with 50 seats. Today, the large festival hall alone can accommodate more than 6,000 guests. The Schottenhamel family invented the Oktoberfest beer in the hot summer of 1872.

  • Zoom into this town and find the landmark which fits this criteria:

B.

The camp has 2 crematoriums one small built in 1940 and one larger built in 1942 - 1943. Both crematory buildings are outside of the camp's perimeter fence and can be reached through a gate on the left side of the camp near the church.

Find the larger one, how many crematorium ovens are there in here? Tip - click into street view mode, study the buildings features and click the blue circles where you'd think the ovens would be located.

 

 

Dachau and the holocaust
Although there was a gas chamber here, it was never used for mass extermination. Instead, condemned prisoners were executed (usually by hanging) in front of the ovens. Over the 12 years of the camp there were 206,206 prisoners and deaths of 31,951.

We understand that the this clue is fairly graphic and could be conceived as distasteful, however two team members have been to Dachau and one of our team has just come back from a visit of Auschwitz and we all found our visits harrowing. We use these questions as an education tool only. And our aim is to try to remember and honour all the tragic loss of life that happened at this camp and many others, so that it never will happen again.

 

C. 

  • Position your screen so it is directly above this landmark at a height of approximately 1000m / 1km.
  • Identify where the gate house is.
  • Click into street view mode and click on the only blue circle located on the gate house.
  • This will bring you into a photo in which there is a woman with a black backpack and white trousers (if you can't see this exit the photo, zoom in and out of the area and repeat the previous steps until you are in the right photo).
  • Nazi concentration camps were infamous for having the slogan 'Arbeit Macht Frei' above the door meaning 'Work sets you free', look around this photo and locate this. Several of the letters are obscured by the gate housing but how many are completely hidden? Tip - look carefully you are only looking for the letters which you cannot see at all. If you can see any part of the letter this counts as being visible.
 

 

Use A, B & C to work out the sums below for X Y & Z.

 

    X = The numbers B, D & C together read as one number (e.g. 134).

    D = (A ÷ B - C)

     

     

    Y = A ÷ B + C

     

     

    Z = B
